Lonely Index Methodology
Our measurement model plus reliability notes and safeguards.
Dimensions and weights
We score loneliness across five drivers. Each dimension is normalized to 0-100 percent (higher means more risk):
- Subjective Loneliness: felt connection and belonging.
- Expectation-Reality Gap: when hopes and outcomes diverge.
- Digital Dependence: the balance of online and in-person signals.
- Social Frequency: weekly opportunities to connect.
- Relationship Quality: depth, safety, reciprocity.
Total score S is a weighted blend (0 is best, 100 is worst):
S = 0.35 L + 0.25 G + 0.15 D + 0.125 (100 - F) + 0.125 * (100 - Q)
Reverse scored items are handled before aggregation; all subscales use the same 1-5 Likert base.
Reliability and confidence
- Short term noise: mood and context can sway answers; compare results across two to four weeks.
- Consistency: focus on direction and repeated confirmation (for example, total -6 with Gap -8).
- Actionability: small, repeated micro tasks create signal faster than a single burst of effort.
Ethics
- Minimization: we collect only what is needed to show progress and run your account.
- Anonymization: star map shares are opt in and can be public, anonymous, or private.
- Control: export or delete on request; the tool is educational, not medical advice.
